Many of our Facebook readers expressed interest in hearing my insight regarding what goes into the design of a new home, so I wanted to kick things off by discussing this custom kitchen located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. It was recently nominated for a Texas Association of Builders (TAB) Star Award for Best Kitchen in the $1M – $2M category.
The homeowners requested a contemporary home with clean lines and no clutter, but it was also very important to them that the home still felt warm and inviting. To achieve those results:
1. My team worked with the homeowners to select natural wood and stone finishes to create a warm atmosphere that offsets the cool tones of the stainless steel appliances.
2. To maintain the view as the central focus, there is a working kitchen hidden behind a frosted glass door. This area contains countertops and outlets so smaller items — such as toasters and blenders — can be utilized without cluttering the view in the main kitchen area.
3. The large pane wood-clad windows focus attention on the spectacular views just beyond the glass and provide the additional function of allowing the homeowners to prep and cook meals while still monitoring their children as they play outdoors.
4. There are multiple access points from the kitchen leading to the covered outdoor grilling station, which makes it easy for the family to BBQ year-round.
Exotic quartzite countertops on the islands in this custom kitchen are eye-catching, yet functional. They’re easy to clean, maintain the clean lines of the kitchen, and include storage underneath.
Even though this kitchen is very contemporary in style, the design elements combine to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for homeowners and their guests. The dark cabinets counteract the cool tones of the stainless steel and warm lighting is reflected in the slick surfaces of the steel and the quartz countertops. Even the chopped Lueders limestone along the wall into the dining area contains warm tones to create a cozy ambiance.
One of the most important aspects of building a dream home is that my team and I listen to the homeowners’ wish list and then bring their vision to life — all while remaining within budget. We were able to achieve that in this custom kitchen by creating a contemporary environment that is still warm, cozy and inviting. We wish the homeowners many years of happiness (and delicious meals) in their beautiful kitchen!
